
Figure 7. This classic map, drawn by Joseph Minard in 1861, is arguably the best statistical graphic ever drawn (see Tufte 1983). The thick, brown band at the left shows the troop strength (422,000 soldiers) at the beginning of the campaign in June 1812. The band width shows the approximate numbers of troops at various locations during the advance to (brown band) and retreat (black band) from Moscow. Also, the retreat band is linked to a temperature scale and dates at the bottom of the chart.
